Message from the Chair |
|
“We often learn more about ourselves and how to improve when we measure our efforts against others.” – Governor Jim Doyle The Wisconsin Forward Award (WFA) was created in 1997 for just this reason - to increase the competitive position of Wisconsin companies in the international marketplace, in addition to improving learning and continuous improvement. The WFA looks at how to not only improve performance, but at how to sustain the improvements. The program itself is based on the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence and measures a company in several categories including, but not limited to; Leadership, Strategic Planning, Process Management, and Business Results. The WFA is applicable to all organizations and serves as a performance improvement umbrella under which quality initiatives such as Six Sigma and Lean can function.
Application materials are now available for the 2008 Wisconsin Forward Award. Preliminary intent-to-apply forms to verify eligibility are due November 2, 2007 with final applications due January 11, 2008. WFA is also accepting applications for its 2008 Board of Examiners until October 22, 2007. Examiners review applications and provide feedback based on the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence. Examiner training begins in November.
For more information on the Wisconsin Forward Award or if you are interested in being an Examiner, visit the website at www.forwardaward.org.

This Month’s Topic: Benchmarking
Benchmarking is one of the most effective means to identify improvements
which can make a significant difference to your organization.
How do you identify a suitable activity to benchmark?
As with all improvement activities, it is better to start with a known
problem area that is able to be defined, or an activity where
improvement will provide maximum benefit (the 80/20 rule works
everywhere). Nobody can really grasp an intangible goal like "we want to
achieve excellence". Once the subject activity is identified, spend as
much time as possible defining it. The more clearly you know your
problem, the easier it will be to identify the differences that will
lead to major improvement.
How do you identify a suitable benchmarking partner?
• Primary competitors. A valid comparison, but probably the most
difficult to achieve as they are unlikely to
provide a wealth of factual information allowing you to "catch up".
• Internal. In larger organizations, you could benchmark against similar
activities within other divisions.
• World Class Performers in the activity. These companies are normally
recognizable and will be willing to
share information with a non-competitor.
It is important to recognize that you have identified an activity to
benchmark - it does not need to be benchmarked in your own industry.
We are all proud of doing a good job and are more than pleased to
discuss these achievements with others...... provided that there is a
professional exchange and the chance of mutual
benefit.
