Welcome Our New Regional Director
|
Please join me in welcoming Kam Gupta as the new Region 12 Director. Kam comes to us with 30 years experience with ASQ and has worked with numerous companies in the Midwest. For the last 15 years he has been on his own with Continuous Improvement Technology. His company works with companies on certifications and value added work such as training team players, problem solving, and following quality principles. Kam's philosophy is that the customer is always first and is always right.
Our board had the opportunity to meet Mr. Gupta in the board meeting on September 27, 2004. He has some great ideas and will do a great job sharing ideas between the sections to maximize our value to the membership.
Welcome to Region 12 Kam - we look forward to working with you!!

September 13th Dinner Meeting
|
Memory refresher of ISO terminology was the topic of discussion that was presented in a game setting, similar to Jeopardy, for the September program meeting. Woody Santy was the game host, while others provided the assistance for questions and answers.
A set of interrelated or interacting activities that transform inputs into outputs is a Process. We all know that, but do you recall that the set of policies, procedures, or requirements that are determined as a reference is the Audit Criteria? Or did you recall that the totality of characteristics related to the availability performance and its influencing factors of reliability, maintainability and support is a description of Dependability?
We may know all or some of them, but it was challenging to quickly furnish the descriptor in the form of a question while the clock was ticking down. It was a refresher for those that knew the answers, and informative for those who had maybe forgotten. We may see this game format as a refresher on other topics in the future. Woody also led the Mini-Session discussion on Capability studies and minimum number of samples to make it reliable. These events followed an informative tour at RB Royal Industries that demonstrated Quality process applications in a Lean-Focused environment.

What Are You Waiting For?
Get Certified!
|
In today's world, where quality competition is a fact of life and the need for a work force proficient in the principles and practices of quality control is a central concern of many companies, certification is a mark of excellence. It demonstrates that the certified individual has the knowledge to ensure the quality of products and services. Certification is an investment in your career and in the future of your employer.
ASQ offers several resources that can help you prepare for the ASQ certification exams. Preparatory options range from public courses, to e-Learning, to self-directed learning, to books.
This month's featured certification:
ASQ Certified Quality Technician (CQT)
The Certified Quality Technician is a paraprofessional who, in support of and under the direction of quality engineers or supervisors, analyzes and solves quality problems, prepares inspection plans and instructions, selects sampling plan applications, prepares procedures, trains inspectors, performs audits, analyzes quality costs and other quality data, and applies fundamental statistical methods for process control.
Minimum Expectations for a Certified Quality Technician:
-
Must be able to define quality concepts and quality processes, including six sigma basics, cost of quality, etc.; must be able to apply quality tools; must be able to interpret information and data; must be able to apply team concepts both as a member and leader.
- Must be able to define statistical techniques, including basic elements of design of experiments (DOE) and reliability; must be able to determine what data to collect for a specific technique, how to apply it to various statistical methods, and how to analyze results.
- Must know which measurement and test equipment (M&TE) tools are appropriate for various tasks and how to assess tool accuracy and precision; must understand the concept of standards traceability for M&TE.
-
Must understand and be able to apply basic inspection and testing techniques, including various types of sampling plans; must be able to read and interpret blueprints (drawings), including geometric dimensioning and tolerancing
(GD&T).
-
Must understand and be able to apply various quality audit types and their components, tools, and techniques.
- Must understand and be able to apply the elements of corrective and preventive actions, including root cause analysis, failure mode and effects analysis
(FMEA), and the control of nonconforming material.
|
Each certification candidate is required to pass a written examination that consists of multiple-choice questions that measure comprehension of the Body of Knowledge (BOK). The Quality Technician examination is a four-hour, 100 multiple-choice question examination. It is offered in the English language only.
Certification fee is $155 for members, $260 for nonmembers. Retake fee is $105 for members and nonmembers. $50 of the fee is an application fee, and is not refundable.
The application deadline for the March 5, 2005 CQT exam is January 7, 2005.

Ask Woody |
| Do
you have a good definition of rework vs repair and when an MRB
(Material Review Board) is typically required?
I'm having a hard time explaining this to production
employees.
|
One way to think about rework vs. repair is this:
All repair is rework, but not all rework is repair.
In both cases additional work (or service) must be performed beyond the original intent.
A repair indicates that something was not correct the first time.
A rework can occur when all was done properly the first time, but for example:
- the customer changed
- the customer requested a change after the product was built
- the forecast was in error requiring modification to match sales
- an engineering change was requested and additional work is required.
|
Typically, a MRB is a regularly scheduled (i.e. monthly) meeting to review discrepant material to reach disposition.
Thanks for asking,
Woody
