Highlights From The December Dinner Meeting |
|
During the
mini-session on December 8th, 2003, Lee Binz of Fox Valley
Technical College, an experienced Wisconsin Forward Award Examiner and
Baldrige National Quality Award Examiner, took us through a
self-assessment process using the Baldrige Criteria. While only a few organizations in the country actually apply
for the Baldrige Award each year, hundreds use the criteria as a road map
and a yardstick, through self-assessment.
This step-by-step process allows an organization, department or
business unit to assess it strengths and target these for continued
emphasis, and identify its opportunities for improvement for future work.
Opportunities discovered in the self-assessment are often rolled into the
strategic plan.
After dinner, Lee Binz
talked about the top ten reasons for applying for the Forward Award.
The experience of answering every question in the criteria and
formulating an application helps an organization really understand its
processes, or its lack of processes.
Along with Lee, two other Forward Award Examiners attending the
session also discussed the top reasons for becoming a Wisconsin Forward
Award examiner.
Some of Lee’s tips
for self-assessment:
- Assemble
a team and choose a facilitator.
- Review
the entire criteria briefly.
- Review
the self-assessment process.
- Complete
the assessment one question at a time.
- Average
the scores by section and calculate an average of all scores.
- Prioritize
the opportunities (identify low cost – high impact opportunities
within each section).
- Start
immediately on some of the low cost – high impact items in each
area, with a responsible person from the assessment team assigned to
each item.
- Use
the assessment output as input to your next strategic planning
process, by assessing the priorities between sections and making the
improvement plans and goals part of your next strategic plan.
- Consider
having a team member apply to be a Forward Award Examiner to gain a
better understanding of the criteria and scoring process.
- Consider
applying for the Wisconsin Forward Award.
The feedback report will provide valuable information about
your organization’s strengths and opportunities for improvement.

presentations are available from Lee Binz. Simply send a request for the
