ASQ Section 1206 Needs
You!!
|
As we prepare for the next program year, we are looking for a Vice-Chair. This is an excellent opportunity to network with fellow quality professionals and develop additional leadership skills. The Vice-Chair role is a support position to the Chair and spends the year learning about the behind the scenes roles that take place to make the chapter so wonderful. After a year as Vice-Chair, you will have the opportunity as Chair, advising a terrific board of peers.
Take some time and consider this wonderful opportunity. If interested, please contact any board member. We would be happy to have you as part of our team.

Notice of ASQ Section 1206 Elections for Fiscal Year 2005 - 2006
|
Elections for the next fiscal year are approaching! This year we will be voting for a Vice-Chair and Secretary. The fiscal year runs from July 1, 2005 - June 30, 2006. The election will be held at the April 11th dinner meeting following the Oshkosh Truck Corporation tour. Here's how the election works:
| 1. The Nominating Committee will nominate, at a minimum, one eligible candidate for each elected position. In addition, nominations from the general Section membership can be made as well. Nominations from the general Section membership require the submission of a nomination petition, signed by at least 10 Members, and submission to the Section Secretary prior to the election. |
| 2. If there is not more than one nominee for an elected position, the nominee shall be declared elected by acclamation at the dinner meeting on April 11, 2005. Any contested positions shall be resolved through an election. |
If you have any questions about the position responsibilities or would like to nominate a candidate for the Vice-Chair and/or Secretary positions, please advise anyone on the Board. We are trying to arrange for job specific training for shortly after the election!
Thank you for your consideration!

ASQ Section 1206 Board Meeting Minutes From January 24, 2005
|
- Bruce reported that the spring conference is set.
- Mini-sessions/dinner meetings are set for the remainder of the program year; some details still need to be worked out.
- Steve Kiel submitted 1099s to ASQ by the 1/10/05 deadline.
- The group unanimously agreed that a job placement chair is not a necessary function for our section. Job opportunities will be considered on a case-by-case basis. In general, we will consider for our website/newsletter: jobs benefiting a section member for short periods of time. No recruiters will be considered. Postings can be provided to Headquarters outside of the general rule.
- The group agreed that section leadership training would probably be best done after the elections in April for incoming board members.
- To date, it doesn't appear that we have had attendance at our dinner meetings from Milwaukee membership as a result of publishing in their newsletter.
- Mark has started to send electronic newsletters to those who have requested (about 65 members and 4 nonmembers). There was more discussion on combating the cost of the newsletter with many ideas. The following was later agreed upon via a teleconference with Hilda, Ron and
Jonna: less information, less pages via hardcopy, additional information could be posted on the website. Mailings need to continue to be sent first class to be timely.
- We are averaging 182 unique hits per month on the website this program year; up 14% from last year.
- Survey will be posted on the website after the spring conference (mid March) for members to tell us what they would like to see in the next program year.
- We may need to double the budget for website next program year with our increased dependence on it.
- Jim Wenske reported that the rate of new members through November is on a steady downward trend. There were only 2 new members in January.
- Jim Wenske shared the financial report with us for Steve. We are operating at a net loss for the year of $3,237; attributed mostly to printing and postage.

Ask Woody |
| Dear Woody,
Is there any difference between serial correlation and autocorrelation in regard to independence of sequential data? This comes up sometimes when I am performing a capability study in
Statgraphics. An example would be our iron pouring temperatures that we take every fifteen minutes. |
Woody says this is a question he will answer himself:
Autocorrelation is most often used in Time Series analysis or simple linear regression (one of the most popular measures is the Durbin-Watson D-statistic) which examines the residuals in the order the data were collected, it looks for a non random pattern. Most of the time autocorrelation uses a lag of one (1) and looks for correlation.
However, correlation could be a lag of two or three or any number. When performing a multiple regression (more than one x variable), any x could have a lag or one x could have a lag with another of the x variables, and in these situations they usually refer to it as serial correlation.
So, you could think of autocorrelation as a particular subset of serial correlation, but the meaning is the same - there is not independence of the x variable(s).
In your situation, I can foresee a situation where the capability study is examining a run chart (the data over time - also known as time series). Large vats of iron take time to heat up and cool down, and you probably have a heating system with a feed back loop that maintains temperature within a band. Sequential readings go from below the average for a while to above until it cools down and the heater kicks in again and brings it back up. When the period of the heating cycle is longer than the sampling interval it would show up as autocorrelation - or the more general terms, serial correlation.
Thanks for your question!
