Congratulations ASQ Section 1206! |
We have once again earned Section
Management Process (SMP) awards for Gold Excellence, Section Planning
and Section Basics. The Section Management Process is in place to assist
sections in their planning and implementation of services and programs
that will meet the needs of their current and fut ure
members. SMP encourages sections to continually measure, address, and
improve customer satisfaction by incremental improvement. It is a
management process that emphasizes the importance of:
- Assessing member needs and
expectations
- Developing a
management/business plan and operating budget
- Measuring the section’s
performance
|
ASQ Section 1206 would like to thank
members and board members for their participation and help in achieving
this honor for several years in a row now. Your involvement demonstrates
your commitment to Quality. We also encourage others to get more
involved! Volunteering with ASQ provides you access to people, tools,
and ideas that stimulate improved performance and results through
quality.

Message from the Chair |
|
This is my last chance to
send a message to our Section members through this
column; this time as Past Chair since our new officers
took over as of 01Jul07. Thank you to the membership for
your support and ideas necessary for you to run the
section while I was an officer. You see, the Chair does
not run the section. The Board of Directors runs it with
help from the members, while the Chair provides the
leadership. It takes you to run your Section.
Having been one of the
Section Officers for the last five years, it is now time
to let others steer the ship. Congratulations to our new
team of four Officers: Kelly Duel as Section Chair;
Kevin Woolsey as Section Vice Chair/Chair Elect; Dolores
Berg returning as Secretary; and Mark Green returning as
Treasurer. I know that they will provide fine leadership
to this Section, but they still need your assistance and
dedication. To support them we have 16 other members as
Committee Chairpersons or Team Leader. Some of these
committees need occasional support or assistance from
you, the membership. Don’t be afraid to help out once in
a while. You will be pleasantly surprised.
Congratulations:
Volunteer of the Year award to Michelle Kilgas for long
time leadership in the area of Programs; Member of the
Year award to Jim Cookle for his dedication in
attendance and support of our programs; Member Survey
Participant winner to Roger Thompson, whose name was
drawn as he helped the board in listening to the voice
of the customer.
In reflection, I am
amazed at the broad knowledge of Quality out in our
Section. You are truly amazing. Please share your
knowledge by becoming involved with Section activities.
You will be rewarded through discussion and the contacts
you make. I urge you to participate in our classes and
program opportunities. Continue to improve and to help
us improve. Thank you for your support and allowing me
to lead the Section.
Ron Jochimsen, ASQ#1206 Section Chair.

Learn About Quality |
|
This month's topic: LeadershipYou know how
to manage, but do you know how to lead? Leadership is quite different
from management. Leaders establish new and radical visions. They bring
vision to reality with shared values that gain commitment. Managers work
within a system to maintain existing goals and direction. They generally
use reward and punishment to gain compliance. Successful organizations
need both managers and leaders.
Charismatic leaders in all fields and
situations exhibit a common behavior pattern. They:
- Challenge the Status Quo
- Create a Compelling
Vision
- Establish Shared Values
- Enable Others To Act
- Model the Way
- Encourage the Heart
|
Charismatic leaders do these things
constantly in large and small ways. Cumulatively, these actions change
attitudes, responses and methodologies within the organization.
Take a good look at your own
leadership skills. There are lots of different assessment tools
available on the internet. Knowing your strengths and weaknesses puts
you in a better position to change and develop your leadership
abilities. Maybe it’s time to hone your personal leadership style,
inspire passionate followers, develop & sell your vision, discover power
you didn't know you had, and build trust. As a result, you will more
effectively lead change, retain your best people, motivate employees to
go "above and beyond", sell your ideas and build accountability. Go
ahead - take the leap from manager to leader! |
