October 2008: What is Gemba? 12/18/2008
What is "gemba"? I've heard folks around my place of employment discussing gemba walks and standard work. I asked one of them what it meant and they just answered that it was some Chinese or Japanese thing....... CommentsRobert George 11/30/2010 13:59
Actually this is not completely accurate. Gemba is the term used to describe "the core" of the process where value-added work occurs. Non-Gemba activities are those that do not contribute to the core processes or outcomes, are non-value-added, and therefore should be evaluated for elimination. The idea is not to distract Gemba workers with Non-Gemba activities.
